The Master's degree in Applied Telecommunications and Engineering Management (MASTEAM) organizes a weekly series of activities (talks, technical visits, discussion pannels) that complement the academic activities with real-world experiences from companies, research centres and institutions in the main topics of the master: Internet of Things. Smart Cities, 5G mobile communications, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Radio (SDR), cloud computing, augmented reality and audiovisual services, among others.
This week's activity will be a talk from Dr Pere Tuset (UOC)
March 1st, 17:30h (duration 1h), Building C4, Classroom 021B, EETAC, Campus Castelldefels UPC. How to arrive.
Title: IETF 6TiSCH: Enabling distributed process monitoring and control applications in the industry.
Abstract: The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) revolution relies on ubiquitous low-cost sensor- and actuator-enabled devices with constrained computational capabilities that operate autonomously and are connected to the Internet through low-power wireless communication technologies and standards. The deployment of such devices within the factory floor will bring together OT (Operation Technologies) and IT (Information Technologies) and enable distributed industrial process monitoring and control applications. Standards for low-power wireless communications technologies specifically targeted at the IIoT are reaching technical maturity and being adopted by industries around the world. One particular set of standards is being developed by the IETF 6TiSCH standardization Working Group, which encompasses IEEE802.15.4 TSCH, IETF 6LoWPAN, RPL and CoAP, and enable to provide deterministic and robust connectivity to end-devices. The talk will provide an introduction to the 6TiSCH stack and give application examples to understand its potential in the industry.
Bio: Pere Tuset-Peiró received the BSc and MSc in Telecommunications Engineering from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in 2007 and 2011, respectively, and the PhD in Network and Information Technologies from Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) in 2015. From January 2012 to February 2014 he was researcher at the DPCS (Distributed, Parallel and Collaborative Systems) research group at the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3) of Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) working on MAC (Medium Access Control) protocols for low-power wireless communications. From March 2015 to February 2016 he was firmware engineer at Hewlett & Packard working at the Large Format printers division. Since March 2016 he is Assistant Professor at the Computer Science, Multimedia and Telecommunications Department and researcher at the WiNe (Wireless Networks) research laboratory at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). He was visiting researcher at Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) and University of California Berkeley (UCB) in 2012. He has published over 20 publications in high-impact journals and conferences and holds 7 international patents related to wireless communications and printing devices. He received the Best Demo Runner-up Award at the prestigious IEEE INFOCOM for a demo entitled "Demonstrating Low-Power Distributed Queuing for Active RFID Communications at 433 MHz". He is IEEE member since 2011.
