The Master's degree in Applied Telecommunications and Engineering Management (MASTEAM) organizes a weekly series of activities (talks, technical visits, discussion pannels) that complement the academic activities with real-world experiences from companies, research centres and institutions in the main topics of the master: Internet of Things. Smart Cities, 5G mobile communications, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Radio (SDR), cloud computing, among others.

This week's activity will be a talk from Mr Andreu Araque (Datumize)

Title: IoT and Dark data applied to real challenges. Andreu Araque (Datumize)

Abstract: Nowadays, there are a lot of technical terms that are extremely popular like big data, IoT, Machine Learning... Datumize tries to apply them in real projects. In this talk, we will explain a winner prototype developed during the Intel IoT Hackathon 2016, a smart solution to improve the satisfaction of public transportation users.

In the era of Internet of Things computation never happens in one place. Systems always consist of multiple distributed components at the edge (close to data source) and in the cloud. Machine-to-machine communication, previously known only in industrial solutions, now becomes a state-of-the-art in every “smart” solution. Streams of data generated and preprocessed at the edge hit cloud storages that become a base for data scientists who help decision makers take appropriate data-driven solutions.

From the data science perspective, some questions that would be interesting to answer on the captured set of data are: What would be the optimal temperature and light level in the bus? What levels and types of noise start to negatively impact commuters? How much the driver’s behaviour and traffic impact the mood of commuters? Exactly what events cause them to be unsatisfied?

Bio: Andreu Araque is a Telecommunications Engineer. He is currently the Director of Engineering at Datumize, involved in the innovation and development of products related to Dark data and IoT. Datumize offers multiple software and hardware solutions to explore dark data that is not obvious to capture and analyze.

Before that, Andreu Araque worked as Software Architect and Tech Lead at Strands, a fintech provider for large banks like Barclays, Deutsche Bank and others.
