MASTEAM Talks - Dr Jordi Portell - Data compression for Space, ground and maritime applications: FAPEC, a versatile and efficient data compressor

13/02/2019

Next MASTEAM Talk: "Data compression for Space, ground and maritime applications: FAPEC, a versatile and efficient data compressor" from Dr Jordi Portell (DAPCOM). March 6th, 17:30h (duration 1h). Classroom C4-021B, EETAC, Campus Castelldefels UPC.

The Master's degree in Applied Telecom. and Engineering Management (MASTEAM) organizes a weekly series of activities (talks, technical visits, discussion pannels) that complement the academic activities with real-world experiences from companies, research centres and institutions in the main topics of the master: Internet of Things. Smart Cities, 5G mobile communications, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Radio (SDR), cloud computing, augmented reality and audiovisual services, among others.

This week's activity will be a talk from Dr Jordi Portell (DAPCOM).

Speaker: Dr Jordi Portell (DAPCOM).

Title: "Data compression for Space, ground and maritime applications: FAPEC, a versatile and efficient data compressor"

Abstract: The Fully Adaptive Prediction Error Coder (FAPEC) is a data compression solution based on entropy coding. It was originally conceived by UPC and UB researchers to overcome some limitations of the CCSDS 121.0 standard for lossless data compression in space applications. It was later extended with a versatile framework and several pre-processing algorithms to support different kinds of data, from nanosatellite instrumentation to maritime sounders, also including structured or plain binary arrays, as well as text files. In this talk  we will briefly describe its operation principles, including the pre-processing stages currently available, framework features and use cases.

Bio: Jordi Portell i de Mora is an Electronics Engineer and Doctor in Applied Physics by the UPC. He has been working on data compression algorithms since 2000, initially focused on space applications but later also on ground applications. He is CTO and co-founder of DAPCOM Data Services, a UPC and UB spin-off company being incubated at the ESA BIC  in Castelldefels. He is also researcher at the IEEC-ICCUB, coordinating  some of the data processing chains of ESA's Gaia space mission.
