The Master's degree in Applied Telecommunications and Engineering Management (MASTEAM) organizes a weekly series of activities (talks, technical visits, discussion pannels) that complement the academic activities with real-world experiences from companies, research centres and institutions in the main topics of the master: Internet of Things. Smart Cities, 5G mobile communications, Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Radio (SDR), cloud computing, among others.
This week's activity will be a talk from Dr Diego López (Telefónica I+D).
Title: What Software Networks Are: How We Use Them Now, How We Foresee They Will be Used
Abstract: Current network architectures are ossified. New networking paradigms, such as Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) and the current trend towards virtualization of networks and services will help operators overcome the challenges posed by the increase in traffic demands while keeping the flexibility and quality of experience demanded by users. The talk will introduce these topics and how they will play an important role in future 5G mobile networks.
Bio: Diego Lopez received his MS from the University of Granada in 1985, and his PhD degree from the University of Seville in 2001. He joined Telefonica I+D in 2011 as a Senior Technology Expert on network middleware and services. He is currently in charge of the Technology Exploration activities within the GCTO Unit of Telefónica I+D. Before joining Telefónica he spent some years in the academic sector, dedicated to research on network service abstractions and the development of APIs based on them, collaborating in several open-source initiatives related to these matters. His current interests are related to network virtualization, infrastructural services, network management, new network architectures, and network security. Diego chairs the ETSI ISG on Network Function Virtualization, and the NFV Research Group within the IRTF. https://www.linkedin.com/in/dr2lopez
