Dimecres 30 de març: Xerrada "Data Compression in Space Missions - FAPEC, an efficient and outlier-resilient data compressor"

18/05/2016

El dimecres 30 de març tindrà lloc una nova xerrada organitzada conjuntament entre MASTEAM i l'assignatura SAI del Grau d'Enginyeria Telemàtica i dirigida a tota la comunitat EETAC.

Title and speaker: "Data Compression in Space Missions - FAPEC, an efficient and outlier-resilient data compressor", Dr Jordi Portell, Chief technology Officer, DAPCOM.

Time and place: 15:00 h., C4-336V

Abstract: The Fully Adaptive Prediction Error Coder (FAPEC) is a new data compression algorithm based on entropy coding. It was conceived by UPC and UB researchers to overcome some limitations of the CCSDS 121.0 standard for lossless data compression in space applications. Remarkably, it is a fast and lightweight algorithm that offers an excellent coding performance, minimizing the effect of statistical outliers in the data. In this talk we will briefly describe its operation principles, including the pre-processing stages currently available (beyond the simplest DPCM-like stage), and its applicability either in space and ground systems.

Bio: Jordi Portell is Electronics Engineer and Doctor in Applied Physics by the UPC. He has been working on data compression algorithms since 2000, initially focused on space applications but later also on ground applications. He is CTO and co-founder of DAPCOM Data Services, a UPC and UB spin-off company being incubated at the ESA BIC in Castelldefels. He is also researcher at the UB, as Technical Manager of the Initial Data Treatment system of ESA's Gaia space mission.
