ESA Education Office would like to inform you about the current opportunities to apply for ESA Academy's Training Sessions. These training Sessions will be held at ESA Academy's Training and Learning Facility in ESEC-Galaxia, Belgium in 2020.

Two calls for applications are open to students:

  • Earth Observation Remote Sensing Workshop 2020: The aim of this 5-day workshop is to introduce university students to the various types of Remote Sensing images and how they can be used and analysed with the help of the tools used in the space industry. The students will learn about remote sensing data analysis, radar, optical and thermal infrared image generation and processing. Technical lectures are complemented by exercises and practical sessions, using the example of Sentinels mission to show how raw data acquired by Earth Observation satellites are collected, calibrated and distributed to end-users.

Dates: 11 - 15 May 2020
Open to: Master and PhD students in an engineering or scientific subject
Deadline: 23 March 2020

  • Concurrent Engineering Workshop – May 2020: During this 4-day workshop, university students will learn about concurrent engineering and its benefits, taking advantage of the use of the ESA Academy’s Concurrent Design Facility (CDF). Guided by ESA experts, the students will first learn to use the Open Concurrent Design Tool (OCDT) and identify design drivers. They will then be divided into groups of 2 or 3 to cover the different disciplines and, together with their groups, they will create a subsystem concept in order to later achieve an already identified mission concept using concurrent engineering.

Dates: 26 –29 May 2020
Open to: Master and PhD students in an engineering subject or physics
Deadline to apply : 30 March 2020

One call for application is open to Universities:

  • Concurrent Engineering Challenge 2020: The ESA Academy Concurrent Engineering Challenge features groups of up to 30 students, each one supervised by two system engineers in the four Concurrent Engineering Facilities (CEF) located in three European universities and the ESA Academy’s Training and Learning Facility (Belgium). Groups will be given a specific mission to design in four days. Students in each group will be divided into small teams of two to four people to cover the following disciplines: structures, configuration, power, mechanisms, thermal, attitude and orbit control, propulsion, trajectory analysis, communications and data handling. Students within each small team will create a subsystem concept in order to achieve the mission parameters using the Concurrent Engineering approach. The groups will not be competing against each other. Instead, they will use video conferencing to share each day’s progress, raise any particular difficulties they are facing, and receive helpful input from the other participants. At the end of the week, each group will present their final design. The Challenge will last five days and take place during the last quarter of 2020 depending on the availability of the selected universities. Students will be selected by ESA and the participating universities at a later stage.

Dates: Q3 2020
Open to: Universities located in an ESA Member State
Deadline to apply : 9 March 2020
