EEETAC's student participates in the European Space Agency-ESA Fly a Rocket! programme

Oct 30, 2024

The programme, developed in collaboration with the ESA Education Office, Andoya Space Education and the Norwegian Space Agency, is aimed at students in the first years.

The 100 people selected for the program attended webinars held twice a month for about four months, where they received initial training in aerodynamics, stability and flight mechanics focused on rockets. Afterwards, after an evaluation process, 24 people were selected to travel to the Norwegian Arctic and participate in the launch of a rocket probe.

The "Launch Campaign" lasted a week, from August 18 to 24, and took place at the Andoya Space base on the island of the same name. Four teams were organized there (sensors, telemetry, flight modeling and payload), each dedicated to a specific part of the rocket that was assembled by all the participants.

Óscar Rigol, a student of the double degree in Telecommunications Engineering and Aerospace Systems Engineering, was assigned to the sensor team where, together with two other people, they assembled and programmed an array of 10 thermistor sensors to measure the temperature gradient in the rocket cone.

After the launch, they had to process all the data recovered from the rocket and compare them with existing theoretical models or CFD simulations.

Óscar Rigol highlights that "It was a very enriching experience, both academically and personally, to be able to work on the construction of a real sounding rocket, with people from different parts of Europe and different backgrounds. We should encourage more students from our centres to participate in programmes of this type."

From the School we congratulate Óscar Rigol, and encourage our students to participate in future editions.

Congratulations!!
