Presentation event of the 6GLabNet, an experimental autonomous network to test and validate next-generation mobile technologies.
Apr 09, 2026
UPC has launched the 6GLabNet, a pioneering infrastructure in Spain and a reference in Europe for experimentation with advanced 5G and future 6G communication technologies integrated with artificial intelligence.
The 6GLabNet network connects the Diagonal Nord Campus in Barcelona and the Baix Llobregat Campus in Castelldefels with 32 km of optical fiber and offers ultra-low latency communications (less than 1 ms), essential for applications such as autonomous driving, drones or emergency services. It also integrates AI to manage the network automatically and efficiently.
The 6GLabNet allows new technologies to be tested and validated in real environments before commercializing them, reducing risks and accelerating development. It is a platform open to both research and companies, and also serves to train students in advanced technologies.
Currently, projects such as autonomous vehicles, AI applications in agriculture, robotics, augmented reality and industry 4.0 are being developed there.
The project has been funded with 4 million euros from the European Horizon 2020 program and state initiatives, and positions the UPC and Catalonia as international benchmarks in the development of future communications.
The presentation ceremony, which took place simultaneously on April 8th at the Diagonal Nord Campus in Barcelona and the Baix Llobregat Campus in Castelldefels, was attended by institutional, academic and researcher representatives. Among the main authorities were the Minister for Digital Transformation, Óscar López, representatives of the Castelldefels City Council and the Barcelona City Council, the rector of the UPC and the researchers responsible for the projects.
