The Bachelor's degree in Satellite Engineering has as its main objective to provide a complete and rigorous training in the knowledge, skills and competences necessary to develop a professional career in the space sector. This sector is at a time of expansion and constant evolution, integrating new technologies such as 3D printing, artificial intelligence, advanced electronics or new generation mobile communications. Satellite Engineering graduates will be prepared to adapt to these innovations and become key players in the future of the sector.
The curriculum is aligned with the needs of companies and organizations in the sector and with the NewSpace Strategy of the Generalitat de Catalunya. This NewSpace initiative promotes technological, social and business actions aimed at democratizing access to space for the benefit of a greater diversity of public and private actors, and with them, the whole of society. This opens up a range of opportunities for innovation in a wide variety of applications and services.
Teaching model
EETAC is a pioneer in the application of innovative teaching methodologies and envisages the application of the CDIO (Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate) methodology to the degree in Satellite Engineering. CDIO assumes a practical approach, based on the realization of realistic projects that simulate the engineering process, from the idea to its operation. Thus, the 4 pillars of the CDIO are:
- Conceive: define the problem and set goals.
- Design: develop creative solutions considering technical, economic, social and environmental factors.
- Implement: build or prototype the solution.
- Operate: evaluate operation, identify problems and implement improvements.
This methodology, successfully implemented in more than 100 universities around the world, improves learning and the development of technical and transversal skills, and increases motivation and preparation for the world of work.
The subjects of this degree are taught only once each academic year and for that reason, the re-evaluation criteria defined in this document (in catalan) have been established for the first semester of the degree.
Graduates' skills
The Satellite Engineering student, at the end of the studies, will be able to:
- Design and control the systems that make up a space vehicle, including propulsion, structure, avionics and payload.
- Manage communications with Earth and between satellites.
- Capture, transmit and process satellite data efficiently, applying machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques for their interpretation and exploitation.
- Develop services and applications based on satellite data, offering innovative solutions to real problems in various productive sectors.
Applications of knowledge and skills
The knowledge and skills of Satellite engineers are useful and necessary in multiple applications:
- Observation and management of the territory: environmental monitoring, urban planning, natural resource management.
- Analysis and decision-making in infrastructures: monitoring of structures, traffic management.
- Precision agriculture, crop management, pest and disease forecasting.
- Climate emergency management: monitoring of extreme weather phenomena, forest fire prevention, damage assessment.
- Communications: Expanding coverage for IoT, 5G and 6G, rural connectivity, internet for aircraft and ships.
